[Journal], 1840 Aug-1841 Apr.

Holograph journal of a young Scotsman containing detailed reporting of and reflection on a nine-month tour of Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France. The author records his impressions of famous scenic spots, the weather, travel, food, and social activities on the route to Rome, including hiking in Chamonix; treatment for a bad cold in Berne; and hiring a gondola in Venice. The paintings, sculptures and architecture Smart viewed with his uncle's guidance are also described. The Smarts wintered in Rome, and the journal details more sightseeing; Smart's Italian lessons from the tutor Armollini and his regular conversations with an Italian priest; Carnival in Rome; and his reactions to the many Roman Catholic ceremonies and services he attends, including the profession of a "beautiful young novice" at the Convent of the Purification. Smart's description of his stay in Naples includes praise for two performances by Fanny Kemble; sightseeing at Pompeii, Capri, and Sorrento; and a brief journey to Sicily. The journal ends shortly after Smart's arrival in Paris on his return home, with a description of his visit to the Paris Morgue.
